What is Saffron?
Saffron is a spice that is derived from a flower called Crocus Sativus. This middle-eastern spice has a subtle, sweet taste and is very fragrant, instantly noticeable in a dish. Its exotic taste is what makes it such a luxurious spice. Another reason for its expensive price is that each Crocus Sativus blooms for just seven days each year and produces only three stigmas of saffron. To make sure you are given real, authentic saffron, make sure that the product has a sweet-hay-like smell and that it has all red stigmas and no yellow stamens.

How to Use Saffron
To get the infamous elixir used in many saffron recipes such as paella, buttery saffron rice, or special occasion desserts like saffron-rose water brittle, follow the recipe below:
Mix 2 tsp. of Saffron with a cube of sugar or a pinch of salt to get a powder using a mortar and pestle. This is done to bring out the spice’s flavor and color. After, add ¼ cup of warm water and let cool.
Saffron Storage
Keep the saffron in a cool and dry, preferably dark place. You can put it in the freezer for maximum a year. Saffron water can be stored in a fridge in an airtight container for maximum three weeks.
